Preparing Tomorrow's Parents: Parenting Education for Kids
When you hear the term "parenting education," what comes
to mind? A group of parents sitting in a class learning how to tame
their toddlers' tantrums? We don't typically associate parenting
education with classrooms filled with children learning how to become
caring and competent parents -years before they are parents themselves.
Imagine elementary school students gaining insight into how babies
communicate by observing infants and their parents during scheduled
classroom visits, and becoming aware of growth and developmental
milestones by tracking the height and weight progress of a baby;
fourteen-year-olds talking about the complex demands of parenting
roles and responsibilities; and high school seniors learning the
dangers of shaking a baby.
These are just some examples of how parenting education can be introduced
to young people today so they can become more empathic, nurturing,
and knowledgeable about child development tomorrow.
The Parenting Project is a Florida-based national nonprofit organization
dedicated to bringing parenting, nurturing and relationship skills
education to all children and teens to improve the quality of parenting
in the next generation. They are committed to working towards a
society in which every child is well nurtured, and parenting is
a valued occupation undertaken only by prepared adults.
Parenting is one of the most demanding and complex roles in our
adult lives, but it is also the one that comes without any training.
We can help prepare tomorrow's parents by promoting such parenting
skills as problem solving, coping with stress, demonstrating patience,
caring for others, as well as knowledge about infant brain development,
positive effective discipline, fostering healthy development and
recognizing developmental concerns.
Research indicates that preparing young people to become caring
and competent parents may be the single most effective way to prevent
child abuse and other forms of violence, and improve the mental
health, school preparedness, and academic success of future generations.
