Preventing
Teen Pregnancy
The
National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy is Wednesday, May 5, 2004.
The purpose of this day is to help teens become aware of the importance
of avoiding pregnancy and parenthood before they are ready. Their
message is straightforward: Sex has consequences.
While
recent reports suggest there have been declines in teen pregnancy
rates, the numbers continue to be high. Four in ten girls will become
pregnant at least once before age 20, resulting in over 900,000
teen pregnancies a year.
The
nonprofit, nonpartisan National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy
believes that reducing the nation's rate of teen pregnancy is one
of the most critical and effective ways to improve overall child
well-being and reduce persistent child poverty.
The
National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and its founding partners,
Teen People Magazine and TeenPeople.com, have developed an online
quiz to encourage teens to think about how they might respond in
various sexual situations, and to raise awareness about potential
consequences of their behaviors. This quiz is designed for teens
aged 13 and older.
This
quiz describes sensitive scenarios that many teens face or hear
about from peers. Parents are encouraged to look at the quiz before
sharing it with their teen children to determine whether it would
be appropriate for their family, and whether it would serve as a
useful resource for sharing information and promoting meaningful
dialogues.
